Wilcox Historical Society Named Best of Bama Heritage Tour Winner for 2026

The Wilcox Historical Society is honored to announce that we have once again been recognized by the readers of Alabama Magazine as a Best of Bama Winner for Heritage Tours in the publication’s 2026 Arts & Entertainment Awards.

This recognition marks our fourth Best of Bama award, having also received this distinction in 2020, 2022, 2025, and now 2026.

For our organization, this award represents far more than a title. It is a celebration of the people, places, and stories that make Wilcox County one of Alabama’s most remarkable historic destinations.

For decades, the Wilcox Historical Society has worked to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich heritage of our county through historic preservation initiatives, educational programs, publications, community partnerships, and our nationally recognized Tours of Homes.

From the grand antebellum homes of the Alabama River region to rural churches, cemeteries, schools, museums, and family farms, every place has a story worth preserving and sharing.

Our Heritage Tours have welcomed thousands of visitors from across Alabama, the Southeast, and beyond, introducing them to communities such as Camden, Furman, Pine Apple, and Oak Hill while showcasing the architecture, landscapes, and people that define Wilcox County’s unique sense of place.

This award belongs to many people.

It belongs to the homeowners who graciously open their doors and share their family histories. It belongs to our volunteers who spend countless hours planning events, greeting guests, and preserving historic sites. It belongs to our members and sponsors whose support makes our work possible. And it belongs to the visitors who travel to Wilcox County each year to experience our history firsthand.

As we celebrate this recognition, we are equally excited about the future.

The Society continues to move forward with plans for the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic Wilcox Female Institute, one of Alabama’s most significant educational landmarks. We are also preparing for a full calendar of programs, special events, travel opportunities, and America 250 initiatives as our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of independence.

Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for the 2027 Pine Apple Tour of Homes, which promises to continue our tradition of sharing some of Wilcox County’s most treasured historic properties with visitors from near and far.

We are deeply grateful to Alabama Magazine for this recognition and to everyone who has supported the Wilcox Historical Society throughout the years.

Together, we remain committed to our mission:

Preserve. Promote. Celebrate.

Thank you for helping us share the story of Wilcox County with Alabama and beyond.
