Roland Cooper was a prominent and powerful figure in local, county, and state politics having served for two terms as mayor of Camden, was a delegate to the 1952 Democratic National Convention, and was elected to five terms in the senate. During his fifth term, he resigned to accept Gov Wallace’s appointment as Probate Judge of Wilcox County. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as chairman of numerous key committees, was an acknowledged expert in parliamentary procedure, and was three times voted “Most Effective Senator” by the press, radio, and television reporters. He was affectionately referred to as the “Wily Fox from Wilcox County.”
Come join us at our next meeting on Sunday, October 13 at 2pm and hear more about Roland Cooper from our guest speaker (and Cooper’s grandson), Roland Cooper Shattuck of Tuscaloosa. Cooper Shattuck is a practicing attorney and principal of Cartography Consulting, LLC.
Cooper earned his B.S. in Economics from Georgia Tech in 1987 and his J.D. from The University of Alabama School of Law in 1990. He is a member of the Alabama Academy of Attorney Mediators, on the rosters of mediators and arbitrators maintained by the American Arbitration Association and the Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution, and on panels of neutrals for various federal courts. Cooper is also a playwright. His “Love and Cheese Toast” evolved from a string of family stories, triggered by poignant photos that themselves tell tales, into a script constructed into full production for Theatre Tuscaloosa’s one-act play festival back in March 2019.
The meeting will be held at the Wilcox Female Institute located at 301 Broad Street in Camden.
Everyone is welcome to attend! A reception will follow the meeting.
