Hello Historical Society of Wilcox County, Alabama,
My name is Almalene (Alma) Higginbotham Cornwell and I live in Crandall, Texas. In 1992, with the help of Mrs. Connie Hines of Camden, Alabama, we located the family cemetery of Blackley and Mary Polly Fisher Higginbotham on land belonging to Mr. Henderson, near Millers Ferry in Wilcox County. Family members made several trips to the area and met so many wonderful people while reclaiming the cemetery. A lady from your historical society came out and asked us to contact the society to get it registered as a historical site. Sadly, I did not follow up. I do not have her name with me at this time, but I have it somewhere and I have her picture at the cemetery. We did go to the County Commissioners office and had the cemetery added to the official county map. We had an iron fence put around the plot by a local contractor in Camden, and repaired the stones (incorrectly we later found out). One stone is in remarkable condition. I have a plot of the burials and placement and size of the cemetery and many photos of before, during and after. What none of us considered at the time was that we would get old and be unable to come yearly and care for the cemetery. It has now been several years there are just a few of us left. I do not know what shape the cemetery is now in. Would the Wilcox Historical Society be interested in obtaining a historical designation for the cemetery. We also cleaned the Dulaney Family Cemetery when we were in Camden.
Thank you,
Alma Higginbotham Cornwell, P. O. Box 447, Crandall, Texas 75114-0447, (972) 489-7639, actexdiv@aol.com.
